Advent Devotional 12/12/16

December 12, 2016, Sidney Dennis
Scripture: Matthew 4:17
An inner change.
By now we are deep in December. The stores are all vying for our attention, the Instagram’s are full of Starbucks cups, and we are done hanging our Christmas ornaments. I will be the first to admit that I love the Christmas Season; I started listening to Christmas music in October. It’s easy to get caught up in the hustle and bustle of it all and focus on the decorations, the gatherings, and the food. This advent season, I want to remind you to repent. Now I know what you are thinking, “Who are you to be telling me to repent, why don’t you repent yourself?” Well I think I will, because to repent does not necessarily mean to change our behaviors or actions i.e. don’t sin.  Repentance is actually more of an inner change of turning our hearts and minds to God. This active change of looking toward God leads to new behavior. In this Advent season I invite you to repent with me so that we can focus on God and the amazing thing He did by sending his son to earth for us. Repenting can look like many different things; prayer, studying scripture, service, acts of kindness. Do what you feel will focus your heart on God.
Dear God, Thank you so much for sending your son to earth to save us from our sin. Help me in this Advent season to repent and focus all my heart on you; to look for you in my every day. I want to know you better and to love you more than I already do.  Amen.
