Advent Devotional 12-8-21

Good morning!  Today’s devotional comes to us from Kelly Bertrand.  Kelly is a Senior Nursing major from Tomball, TX.  I have gotten to know Kelly over the past couple of years as she has served as the President of the TCU Wesley, our Methodist campus ministry.  Kelly is an outstanding student leader and has always presented herself to be a calm and stable presence in the midst of uncertain times, so who better to write about PEACE?  I hope her words will be a helpful resource to you today as we journey through this week of Advent together.  Blessings to you…

John 16:33

“I have said these things to you, that in me you may have peace. In the world you will have tribulation. But take heart; I have overcome the world.”

Reflection

Leading up to this verse, Jesus was telling the disciples that soon he would be leaving this world to be with his Father. He knew that once He was gone, they would face many worldly trials and tribulations. This is why he spoke this message to them. The disciples needed to know that when they were facing hard times, they would still have peace because Jesus had already won the battle.

I thought it was funny that I was chosen to talk about peace in a week where I had 3 tests in 3 days and 4 tests the following week. It is so easy to become overwhelmed by things that are of this world. For me, I fall into the trap of being anxious over things like academic success, relational success, or an uncertain future. I am about to graduate and have no clue where life is about to take me.

In times like these, where I feel completely inadequate, I am reminded that God has given me the gift of peace through Jesus Christ. I am not saying that it is by any means easy to constantly keep this mindset of peace, and when I do inevitably find myself start to slip into thoughts of anxiety and fear, I have to remind myself of those words he spoke to the disciples. As Christians, we do not have to be fearful because we know that our lives are truly in God’s hands, and one day, we will spend eternity with him.

Let us pray.

Heavenly Father, I pray that you will remind us of your gift of peace when we feel like we are drowning. As we approach finals week, a time often filled with stress and anxiety, please calm our hearts and lead us to the truth that in you, we can always find peace.  Amen.
